Nothing bad about the US strategy - if Finland had a population of 250 million we would be doing the same exact thing. I don't believe in moral judgments in the world of economics. All nations are selfish beasts and those are the breaks. But it's not good for the world trade if bilateral agreements start proliferating. That's the road to protectionism.

If China decides to want a GSM-only solution, that decision can be justified at looking at the growth patterns of GSM markets - they are much better than the growth in multiple standard countries like USA and Russia. Europe did not force GSM on China. But if USA succeeds in forcing China to changing their policy, EU may decide to do something equally foolish as a counterattack - like banning CDMA2000 entirely from Europe. I don't want the trade war spectre to start haunting the global telecom markets.

Individual governments should be allowed to make their own choices, even if they are foolish. Europe set tight quotas for Japanese cars in order to protect the domestic industry... and that's now destroying companies like Fiat and Peugeot, they are hothouse flowers unable to compete globally. Everyone should have the right to dig their own graves. We don't need a Globocop that dictates terms to smaller countries.
