Lynn: Good points. Usually a board votes provision for share buy- backs far in excess of what is required to match outstanding option commitments. But given that a company can predict with some accuracy the options that will be exercised in the forthcoming 12 months, it ought to try to administer the programme as cost-effectively as possible. However, I don't think that it can apply any "profits" it makes in these dealings to the bottom line, even though the money does show up on the balance sheet. I'm sure there are more informed posters than I on this subject.
