** SERVICE MERCHANDISE TO FILE FOR CHAPTER 11. Service Merchandise Co.
announced March 16 that it plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The announcement comes after five of its vendors filed an involuntary bankruptcy
petition asking a court to supervise the restructuring efforts of the ailing
retailer. CEO Bettina M. Whyte, a corporate turnaround specialist recruited by
Service Merchandise in January, said in a release that the company plans to use
the Chapter 11 process to transform the company "into a stronger, more focused
and healthier chain."
