Terrence, that is only because you don't understand animal behavior. Altruism is a human rationalization of an evolutionarily fixed (and hence genetically defined) trait. Look at the behavior of animal mothers when their young are threatened. Look at the behavior of crows when a member of the flock is threatened. Look at the behavior of schools of fish.

Because human beings are rational we are prone to rationalizing our actions, and the rationalization is the concept of altruism. Humans are tribal because tribal society had survival value in the past. And the implication of this kind af arrangement is that the group's survival takes behavioral precedent over the individual. But railing about this behavior is about as productive as St. Paul haranguing his flock on the evils of sex.
