ECO LOGIC Announces Second Stage Of Contract To Destroy HCB Waste
ROCKWOOD, ONTARIO--ELI Eco Logic Inc. ("ECO LOGIC" or the "Company") announced today receipt of a contract from SHE Pacific Pty Ltd, acting on behalf of Orica Australia Pty Ltd., for Phase 2 of a contract aimed at the destruction of a large stockpile of hexachlorobenzene HCB) waste. As in the first contract phase, announced in October 1998, Phase 2 destruction trials are in support of the Hexachlorobenzene Waste Management Plan of the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council, which addresses the eventual remediation of 8,000 tonnes of scheduled HCB waste presently stored in drums in secure storage.
Mr. Robert Morse, Executive Vice President for ECO LOGIC and the executive in charge of this initiative, said: "The current work represents the next step in a progression of evaluation to demonstrate and evaluate the use of Gas Phase Chemical Reduction for the safe, efficient destruction of HCB. The initial work, conducted with our engineering subcontractor, Kvaerner Process Services, was successfully completed in December, providing a level of assurance on our part and that of SHE Pacific that full scale trials at our plant in Western Australia will yield valuable operating and engineering information from which design initiatives to achieve optimum performance can proceed. A major
advantage, in addition to the proven efficacy of our process for the safe destruction of chlorinated hydrocarbon waste material, is the availability of a permitted, commercial facility for operational test and demonstration. We expect that trials at full-scale will continue to demonstrate that our process offers an excellent solution for HCB waste destruction, and that they will yield a wealth of new information, which will enable ECO LOGIC and SHE Pacific to proceed in support of ORICA's long term objective".
Hexachlorobenzene has been classified as a possible human carcinogen and has received special consideration by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Assembly (WHA).
ECO LOGIC's business is to solve toxic chemical problems in a safe, permanent, cost effective manner. The Process is an innovative technology that converts on-site, organic, hazardous waste into reusable or disposable products. This non-incineration process has gained high public and regulatory acceptance. ECO LOGIC's worldwide hazardous waste cleanup market includes PCBs, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), pesticides, dioxins, contaminated electrical equipment, contaminated soils, chemical warfare agents, and certain petrochemical wastes.
