I'm not looking to win. But I like understanding an important sector of the market, one which will have a ripple effect IMO.

While I'll concede that IBM can lose money in a segment for a very long time to retain market share, are they losing money in the PC sector right now and if so, how much?

Michael Dell threw down the gauntlet when he said that DELL would strive for a 40% market share of the PC business. IBM and others know where that market share would have to come from and they will fight back ferociously.

Hence, the comment that margins will be pressured and the battle will be quite bloody. That is essentially what Niles and other analysts have said.

Now, will Dell be able to execute, diversify its revenue base and keep its earnings growth in line with whatever multiple one wants for the stock while being pressured in the sub-$1,000 segment? That's where the bulls and bears disagree.

I don't have the answer. But at least I am beginning to understand the challenges facing the PC makers worldwide. I don't invest with my head in the sand.<g>
