I still think $43 per pop as bid in the previous C-block auction wasn't exorbitant. That means $8 per person per year for a 20% return on investment [less deductions for how long the spectrum rights exist]. Since Leap is charging subscribers $30 per month = $360 per year it doesn't seem like a very big price to pay for some exclusive highway to work in. Especially as capacity is likely to double or triple with cdmaOne and cdma2000 advances.

There might be some surprises on how high the bids go. It would be super funny if the bids went higher than the previous $10.5bn total last time. NextWave will have made a big mistake going for bankruptcy instead of proceeding with money raising and buildout if that is the case.

The markets are much more developed now. The business case for cdmaOne is clear and the performance of it is also clear. Much more so than this time 3 years ago when C-Block spectrum was sold to people with gender, minorities [I'd love to see the legal definition of 'minorities' - it would make Hitler's attempts to define 'Jews' by measuring noses etc look really scientific], small companies and companies without too much foreign ownership [which is apparently a bit scary for USA citizens though they expect China to allow USA companies to set up shop in China].
