[OT]: John -
Yea, we had that same sign up about 7 years ago and it was more to remind the guys to wear their eye protection and be careful than it was for fun. One normally can't even see a beam in the visible spectrum in a clean area environment so having a totally invisible 1064 nM beam flying all over the place makes it even more difficult. When I went into that lab towards my room I always "scanned" with a piece of paper ahead of me, that way I'd have a little advance notice if one of the mirrors was misaligned on the table.

While I liked the HeCd UV lasers as well as our femtosecond experiments I still liked the big argon-ion lasers the best. Those pretty blues could make all sorts of fun if you shook your shirt over them as the lint falling went "poof, poof" - besides that I like the CW kind better since you don't have to listen to those darn flashtubes constantly firing.

I've built a few lasers myself and still have a very mild copper vapor one working (but not being used) as well as the Melles-Griot HeNe I use for the occasional holograpy fun. Watch out though - I've got a ton of new caps to build a bank out of, about 10,000 W/S worth of flashtubes and a lot of huge pyrex tubing. Still haven't decided what to make out of it yet. I can get a commercial ruby rod pretty cheap but I'm leaning towards Ho:Yag for the fun of it. I've also got to build a good reflector cavity too.

John - I believe I've got a full house, you're betting on drawing 4 of a kind.
I know these people, I think I know what's going on down there and it ain't from JL.
