If NY State is the anti-biz capital of the world, why has IBM prospered there for so long?<<tony the times are a changing......I live in Kingston, NY. IBM has been slowly moving out of the area for the last 5 or 6 years. they closed down a huge complex in the Kingston area and have been slowly eradicating the other facilities in the area. It came as a surprise to me that they would actually be building something in the area. First because of the draconian business tax structure in NY State, nevermind the environmental concerns. We have a guy, not to change the subject, who was in the process of putting up an anti snake fence on his own property because during the spring and summer the place is swarming with rattlers. The environmentalists jumped in, hit him with a court order to prohibit and tear down the fence because it would cause excessive "worrying"[ I kid you not] for the snakes. Thats the kind of stuff you have to deal with. The facility in Kingston, which is massive, was sold for a paltry sum. The guy who bought it is having trouble putting tenants in it. However he does have Fleet bank, who do all of the NY State tax returns. The only reason they are there was because of a campaign promise made by our governor, they use to be in Albany. Why anyone, outside of NYC, would want to start a business in NY, is beyond me. However my opinion is usually influenced by excessive "worrying." |
