When you care enough to send the very best... abcnews.go.com WIRE:March 24, 7:13 a.m. ET Eight B-52 bombers leave British base - witnesses LONDON, March 24 (Reuters) - Eight United States B-52 bombers took off on Wednesday from a British air base setting off speculation their departure might herald an imminent air strike on Yugoslavia. Witnesses just outside the base said the planes were surrounded by armed American troops for more than one hour while they warmed up before taking off at about 1045 GMT from the Royal Air Force base at Fairford in Gloucestershire. Reuters photographer Russell Boyce, who was among a group of journalists at the base, said six B-52s took off and then there was a gap of about 20 minutes before another two planes departed. Asked where the planes that took off on Wednesday were headed, a Defence Ministry spokesman said: ''I don't know.'' ''They have been exercising regularly since they deployed into Fairford last month. They take off every day for training sorties,'' the spokesman told Reuters.
