Nortel Networks Awarded Contract to Provide Remote Access Solution for

BT in Belgium to Unify Internet and PSTN Services

BRUSSELS, Belgium, March 24 /CNW/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply BT in Belgium with a next-generation remote access solution, based upon the CVX-1800 Carrier Class Access Switch. Once completed the network will enable BT to offer wholesale dial IP services while also directly interfacing with the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) voice network. The solution also demonstrates Nortel
Networks' ability to supply Unified Networks solutions, integrating voice and data networks in a single infrastructure.

Based on Nortel Networks' CVX 1800 Carrier Class Access Switch, the network will be able to supply a high density, highly flexible network enabling BT in Belgium to meet the requirements of both corporate and ISP customers.

Traffic from this network will be transported over a 3 ring 2.5Gb/s STM-16 SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) backbone network currently being installed by Nortel Networks for BT in Belgium. The contract for this SDH Network was awarded to Nortel Networks in November 1998.

Nortel Networks' CVX 1800 Access Switch will provide BT in Belgium with a high density, carrier class, secure dial-in solution for seamless remote access while reducing network complexity and costs. The CVX solution offers high performance and low latency making it the ideal platform for a future move to IP Telephony.
The network is also scheduled to interface with the PSTN through a CVX SS7 Gateway, which from a single location will enable termination of all the SS7 signalling for the dial up network.

Philip Lijmbach, managing director, BT in Belgium states, ''The growth in use of the Internet, along with the increasing demand for bandwidth-hungry, high speed data services, is driving network capacity. The CVX 1800 remote access solution enables us to offer carrier grade services, while remaining highly scaleable,
maintaining quality and, above all, interfacing directly to the PSTN at SS7 level.''

Nortel Networks' remote access technology also incorporates the CVX Policy Manager, which controls the CVX 1800 VPOP (Virtual Point of Presence) services. This technology has meant that dial up ports can be offered to ISPs and enterprises without dedicating remote access ports to a specific customer, providing BT in Belgium with greater control and cost effectiveness across the network.

Gary Donahee, president, Carrier Solutions Europe, Nortel Networks said, ''Nortel Networks is pleased to announce this contract with BT in Belgium which provides further evidence of our successful working relationship. The Nortel Networks solution allows BT to increase value to their customers while simultaneously providing them superior integrated solutions. This network will additionally provide subscribers with interconnection to the BT pan-European network.''

Today's announcement represents the fourth contract that BT in Belgium has awarded to Nortel Networks. In addition to the SDH network (where Nortel Networks is the exclusive supplier for the next 5 years), Nortel Networks has also won contracts with BT in Belgium to provide DMS-100 switches and ServiceBuilder Intelligent Networks (IN) solutions. The SDH, IN and DMS-100 components of the networks will be ready for service when the network goes live in July of this
year. It will be managed by Nortel Networks' Integrated Network Management (INM) Solution.

BT in Belgium offers a complete portfolio of international telecommunications services in the areas of data transfer, voice services, virtual private network services, call center networks, application services, EDI, messaging and Internet services. Since September 1998, BT also addresses the whole business community in Belgium, including the SME market with national services like BTtel, its telephony service and BTconnect, its domestic data service.

BT's most important customers include headquarters of multinational companies and most of the European institutions.
