Schlumberger K.K. to Open Regional Technology Center in Japan

TOKYO (March 24) BUSINESS WIRE -March 24, 1999--

Rambus(R) Satellite Characterization Center Provides Memory
Manufacturers with Easy Access to SABER(sm) Skilled Resources and
Leading Edge Schlumberger Test Equipment to Shrink Time-to-Volume

Schlumberger K.K. today announced that it is opening the Rambus(R)
Satellite Characterization Center (RSCC) at its headquarters in
Fuchinobe, Japan in May 1999.

The state-of-the-art technology center will be operated by Schlumberger
Advanced Business Engineering Resources (SABER(SM)), a Schlumberger
business unit that provides innovative technical and business
management services to the semiconductor industry.

"Increased consumer demand for higher speed and performance PCs and
game equipment is shortening product life cycles and compelling memory
manufacturers to shrink time-to-volume," stated Tam Anayama, president,
Schlumberger K.K. "The RSCC is designed to help RDRAM(R) and RIMM(TM)
device manufacturers shrink their time-to-volume and enlarge their
business opportunities by providing the highest performance test
systems with best-in-class SABER technical support."

Offering cost-effective solutions to the significant test challenges
posed by the transition to new RDRAM devices, the RSCC will provide
regional memory manufacturers with easy access to highly skilled
experts and technology-leading equipment. SABER experts will apply
their unmatched expertise and leverage the recently announced
Schlumberger RDX2200(TM) series of test systems to help take advantage
of the new RDRAM device technology.

The RSCC will be staffed by a team of SABER experts and house RDX2200
test cells that provide design verification, device characterization
and thermal characterization of RDRAM devices to memory manufacturers
on an as-needed basis. RSCC customers will benefit from SABER expertise
at the development stage to avoid time-consuming training of their
internal resources, shorten the development cycle and reduce costs.

By employing the RDX2200 series for design through characterization of
their RDRAM devices, memory manufacturers can achieve compatibility
between the development and production environment, and smoothly and
swiftly transition to volume production on the RDX2200 in their fabs.
Advantages of RDX2200 Series

The RSCC will feature the company's recently introduced RDX2200 series,
the only RDRAM device test solution that meets Rambus specifications
for speed and accuracy across multiple sites. Providing the industry's
highest level of accuracy and performance, the RDX22000 series is
designed to significantly shrink memory manufacturers' time-to-volume,
slash months off development cycles and dramatically increase yields.
Featuring 1Gb/s data rate and +/-50ps accuracy, RDX2200 systems
installed at RSCC include:

-- The RDX2200dv debug and verification system is the only fully
integrated e-beam and tester solution available, enabling direct probe
of internal RDRAM device nodes at speed. Features include non-contact,
no load RDRAM device measurement for internal signal probing, easy
setup and automated CAD navigation for fast signal identification, and
high resolution AC timing measurements with 1ps resolution, 8GHz
bandwidth.

-- The RDX2200cs high performance characterization system allows RDRAM
devices to be tested at the absolute widest operating range available.
Hierarchical calibration to the device under test and full system
liquid cooling ensures the highest performance and most repeatable
measurements available. A full suite of ASAP(R) programming and RDRAM
device characterization tools moves new RDRAM device designs into
production faster.

-- The RDX2200tc is an advanced test and thermal characterization cell
designed for RDRAM device product development. By combining the
fastest, most accurate temperature forcing system and most accurate
test system in the industry, it enables test at speed with unparalleled
precision and real time thermal control. The system features the
industry's fastest temperature change: -35(degree)C to +125(degree)C
setpoint range. SABER Innovative Technical and Business Management
Services

SABER was launched in Spring, 1998 to provide a full range of
innovative technical and business management services to the
semiconductor industry. Dedicated to significantly improving its
customers' time to market, time to volume and profitability, SABER is a
performance-compensated "general contractor" across the silicon cycle,
helping companies maximize existing equipment and processes.

SABER leverages more than 60 years of Schlumberger expertise as an
outsourcing partner, along with the company's global infrastructure,
technology leadership, industry knowledge, and extensive experience in
high-volume manufacturing to provide customers with integrated,
end-to-end solutions.

Since SABER began offering comprehensive operational and business
management services to the semiconductor industry less than a year ago,
it has already established a successful track record helping customers
gain up to 35 percent improvement in productivity. The addition of
these new regional facilities is the next step in the business unit's
growth. About Schlumberger

Schlumberger ATE designs and manufactures the most comprehensive line
of manufacturing equipment for testing of semiconductors devices,
including diagnostic systems, automation systems and automatic test
equipment. It also provides measurement systems for front-end
applications, as well as equipment to test complete electronic
assemblies and systems for the telecommunications and automotive
industries. A worldwide industry leader, ATE maintains the largest
internationally installed base of automatic test equipment systems.
