New System-on-a-Chip Digital Switch With Signal
Processing Functionality From Mitel Semiconductor
Provides Low-Cost, Expandable Package for Key
Systems, PBX, Telecom, CTI Applications

Business Wire - March 23, 1999 13:15

KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1999--

Mitel's Expertise in PBX and Telephone Technology Yields System-on-Chip Technology

Mitel Semiconductor, a division of Mitel Corporation (NYSE:MLT) (TSE:MLT) today
unveiled a new, fully integrated system-on-a-chip for digital voice and data switching systems.

Applying its industry-leading expertise in PBX systems technology, Mitel has performed the
system engineering to integrate key system functions on its MT90812 IDX. Included on the
device are TDM switching matrices, a versatile voice conferencing bridge, DTMF and
supervisory tone generation, FSK tone generation support, tone ringer generation, trunk
call-progress tone detection, a D-Channel signalling buffer and an HDLC interface.

It also includes PLL-based clock generation. The result is the industry's most complete and
versatile new digital switch for digital voice data systems with distributed architectures and
digital phones.

The MT90812 IDX is ideal for smaller, low-end systems including PBX and Key Telephone
systems with digital extension ports. It provides switching for up to 64 local channels and 192
backplane channels, and accepts streams at 2, 4 or 8Mb/s. An expansion bus on the switch
enables up to 4 devices to be interconnected, with no hardware overhead, for increased
switching and conferencing capacity.

In addition, the MT90812 supports both constant and variable delay on a per channel basis,
supporting a wide range of voice, data and video applications.

"This new switch integrates most functions and provides the glue logic that typically have been
implemented in discrete component solutions," said Mark Wirth, product line manager for
Mitel Semiconductor's Switch Products. "The IDX is a system-on-a-chip solution providing
key PBX functions in one product.

"The IDX integrates these various diverse functions, reduces the real-time processing load on
the system processor, allows faster time to market and reduces overall system cost. Also, by
using the expansion bus to interconnect several MT90812s, the system design can easily and
cost effectively expand system capacity to suit market needs."

The MT90812 adds to Mitel's performance-proven family of digital switches for
telecommunications and private branch exchange applications. Samples are available now with
prices beginning at $18 each in 10k unit quantities.
