Farmers face tough sell in pressing Congress for emergency aid
Rob Hotakainen / Star Tribune Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON --- When Phil Cyre put his farm machinery up for sale on March 13, he received only $300 for a plow that he figures was easily worth $3,000.
''My neighbors don't have any money,'' said Cyre, who owns a grain farm in Hazel, S.D. ''The bids on the equipment were next to nothing.''
Joining farmers from around the nation, Cyre came to Washington on Monday with copies of his sale bill in hand to lobby Congress for emergency aid.
''This is a national crisis: It's as serious as a military crisis,'' said Wayne Spies, a wheat and livestock producer in Fort Cobb, Okla. ... www2.startribune.com Remember 1 1/2 years ago when I said "the smart farmers were rushing into the sales of equipment the market got worse"? |
