"..Still, Cohen cut her 1999 profit forecast. The companies in the S&P 500 are likely to earn $49 a share from operations this year, below her previous estimate of $52.50, and $53 a share in 2000, Cohen said.

Profits in 1998 came in $3 a share below her forecast of several months ago, Cohen noted. The report today marked her first forecast of 2000 profits.

Profit growth will be helped this year and next by ''less difficult global conditions,'' she said. Energy companies, for example, should swing to a profit in coming quarters after losing money last year, and semiconductor equipment and communication services companies also will see earnings improvements..."
