Hi, Cheeky. What makes the news is what is unusual. How would you like to read the paper today and see an article saying that your neighbor ate breakfast that morning or turn on your tv to see a breaking story about an everyday kid walking to school? ; ) That would be about as interesting as, well, ... this:

As you point out, there are a lot of program bugs everyday; they are not unusual. I think many people view a Year 2000-related failure in a public test to demonstrate readiness as not being an everyday, garden-variety event. Not saying that's the right or wrong view; just saying that's how I think many people look at it and that's why it makes the news.
