Although I am a big admirer of the way McNealy has run the company, I cannot share his enthusiasm for the Justice Dept and the anti-trust law. In most cases, the anti-trust laws have hurt rather than help. Forcing a company to innovate (and not acquire) as a way of controlling mono-polistic behaviour sounds borderline ridiculous. One way to rationalize SUN's success is probably McNealy's single minded distaste for Microsoft and all that it stands for. But once in a while I think he goes to far.

Give Microsoft the credit for being able to spot companies with great tech. and integrate them. In my opinion, the only way to level the playing field with respect to the advantage Microsoft has with leveraging Windows (a monopoly presence without any question) is to separate MSFT into two companies (operating system based and application software based). The operating system co. should be allowed over time develop application software products over time - but it has to compete with an entrenched giant with products such as IE, Word and Excel).

Regards

Alok
