Innovacom Slowly Returning to Life

(c) 1999 Phillips Business Information, Inc.

After a near death experience in 1998, Innovacom, [MPEG] may finally be able to boast more than just a cool stock ticker.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based developer of video compression systems decided to concentrate on DVD and digital transmission systems after failing to deliver on the original intent of the company - developing an MPEG encoder on a chip. Innovacom is still trying to sell off the intellectual property involved in that technology, according to president Frank Alioto.

Last year, the company laid off almost 60 percent of its workforce - now down to 25 - and was able to secure $9.75 million in funding from an unnamed investment company. Alioto says they're well on the way to recovery with the pending shipments of its DVD authoring products and Transpeg transmission systems.

The first four shipments of "DVD Impact" will be shipped this month at a price range of $25,000-$30,000 and will be demo-ed at NAB99. The company has shipped about 10 TransPeg encoders.
