I have some knowledge about this, and I can probably answer it to everyone's satisfacion.

Worldcom (the Wiltel part not LDDS) originally had only a Stratacom Frame relay network. Then they built a Cascade 9000 based network, for two reason as I understan, a) they had operational problems with the Stratacom switches and then they had problems expanding that network. Then they put a second Frame Relay network using Cascade 9000 and migrated a good portion of their customers to the Cascade 9000 network. Not to make it too complicated then they put another frame relay network using Nortel Passport switches, using it for frame relay and X.25. The reason they put a Nortel network, looks like because Nortel basically gave the passports away when Worldcom bought a whole bunch of LD telephone switches from them.

In the mean time, Worldcom upgraded their Stratacom Frame Relay network to an ATM network using Sratacom BPX, a little after they decided using Cascade's 9000 as the primary Frame Relay Switches. They just started buying some ATM switches from Cascade, but ATM market as just transport for Data has not developed for them or anybody else.

UUNET on the other hand buys Cisco Router and Ascend dial servers to run microsoft's network. They hate Frame Relay there, but out of necessity they buy Cascade switches.

Moral of the story, everybody is a player at MFS/Worldcom/UUNET. How much they buy from each, I doubt that they even know.
