I think your interpretation is far too generous, especially as it applies to Seagate. For years, Seagate has been flogged in the desktop space, mostly due to unwieldy vertical integration, slow cycle times, and lateness to market. That they have been driven from the performance niche and into the budget niche is hardly surprising.

On the face of it, designing a platform that can only accommodate two plates doesn't sound like such an impressive innovation. Considering that drive manufacturers have recently pegged the sweet spot as 1 or 2 plates (note to component aficionados: this is highly negative for you!), they would have this simplified setup as a second platform if there is significant savings to be had. But they realize that driving areal density is the real cost-saver.

If there's one thing I know in tech, it's that companies that claim that "lagging edge technology" can yield substantial cost savings are using an euphemism for falling off Moore's Law. It has never worked before; I doubt it will work now.
