Quonnie. I cannot advise you on what to do with your money. I do not advocate you buy or sell any stock.
All I can do is tell you what I am doing. I trade MSFT every day. However, I also have a fairly large position I am holding for the split play.
In view of the split play - it is my belief (this is just my opinion), that MSFT will be higher from today's level (171 1/4) on Friday.
I also speculate that it will be higher next week, until the middle of next week (approx April 1).
Thereafter, I believe (again this is just my opinion) it will decline somewhat. I will therefore sell my split-play block, and continue trading MSFT actively.
Longer term, it will be under pressure from the DOJ resuming the case, but until July, I think it will be somewhat choppy, and then it will decline (in my opinion) rather sharply in the summer and into the fall - more to do with the general market than with MSFT.
The long-long term, (in my opinion) you stand a good chance of making money in MSFT (I believe Windows 2000 will be huge, they will come out with Win 98 Final Edition, there is just a ton of great opportunities for MSFT to grow for at least 2-3 more years to outperform the market).
However, do your own DD. I'm a trader mostly, so my time horizon is rather short. Yet, I also have a longer-term portfolio I don't trade - in it I have a big position in MSFT (in addition to PFE, BMY, AOL and a few others). I feel my money is safe in MSFT.
Good luck in all your investments
