SEOUL -- LG Semicon Co. today reported that the company became profitable again last year, with net earnings of $201 million (252 billion won), compared to a $232 million loss (290 billion won ) in 1997.

The chip maker had $2.23 billion in sales, which was up 40% from $2.01 billion the prevous year. An LG Semicon spokesman said the firm hoped this remarkabke turn-around would buttress its demands to receive a higher price in its projected purchase by Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. Some sources said the chip maker was also hoping the good results might cause the Korean government to back down from its demands for merging LG Semicon into Hyundai.

LG Semicon also said the firm had sharply reduced its debt-to-equity ratio to 247% at the end of last year--very close to the government's demand for the chaebol to reach a debt-to-equity level of less than 200% by the end of this year.

The LG spokesman said acquisition talks with Hyundai were still deadlocked over the purchase price. Some observers believed the latest deadline of March 31 won't be met to settle the pricing dispute.
