I also believe the Lucent & CSCC story has potential. However per the attached, Lucent does have a credible ATM switch in their arsenal. Comments?
Lucent Technologies' GlobeView(R)-2000 ATM Switch Ranks Number One in Yankee Group WAN Market Analysis
WARREN, N.J., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies Inc today announced that its flagship GlobeView(R)-2000 Broadband System asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) core switch has the leadership position in core ATM usage, according to a recently released Yankee Group 1996 WAN Market Analysis Report.
ATM is a transmission and switching technology that takes streams of information -- voice data, and video -- and breaks them into tiny, uniform cells, or packets. ATM, because of its high speed and uniform cell structure, provides an efficient protocol to carry the combined voice, data, and video signals to a destination point and then relay them to the customer.
The Yankee Group report examines three areas of ATM Switch usage, including core, enterprise and edge. Results of the survey show that Lucent Technologies' flagship GlobeView-2000 core switch garners more than half of the core ATM usage.
"Lucent Technologies is the market share leader in the core ATM switch market," said Jennifer Pigg, vice president-Data Communications at The Yankee Group. "The company seems to be recharged since becoming a stand-alone company, and has already shown itself to be more marketing and user-focused and quicker on its feet in terms of product delivery. These are all attributes that contribute to Lucent's leadership in core ATM products."
The Yankee Group report also predicts that the core ATM market will grow from $74 million in 1995 to more than $400 million in the year 2000.
"This is one more example of the market leadership Lucent Technologies has demonstrated in the core ATM switch marketplace," said Dave Schriftgiesser, Lucent Technologies Broadband Multimedia Networking vice president. "We will continue to build on our core competencies and market leadership position to take ATM technology to new levels of acceptance this year."
With more than 30 service provider customers in nine countries around the world, the GlobeView-2000 is the most widely deployed 20 gigabit-per-second core ATM switch on the market. Lucent Technologies Bell Labs has demonstrated terabit ATM switching capability -- the ability to enable next-generation communications networks to handle a trillion bits of information at once -- using the GlobeView-2000 switch fabric.
Based on evolvable ATM technology as the core infrastructure, the products that make up the GlobeView-2000 Broadband System include a service node, service management module, ATM multiplexer and multimedia interface. The System comprises a complete set of high-quality data, multimedia, intranet and Internet networking solutions for commercial and residential customers. |
