Which receiver/processor did you listen to? Which manufactures are moving to Motorola? The docoder itself doesn't make the component good or bad. I know only two manufactures are use MOT's chip now - Onkyo and B&K and both of them are great components. Meanwhile because all others are using Zoran's chip they range from OK (Poineer, Kenwood) to great (Harmon/Kardon, Marantz) and audiophile (Meridian). Pioneer and Kenwood's modals are receivers with built-in AC-3 decoder so they certainly won't sound as good as preamp/processor/amp seperates (such as Onkyo and B&K, if it is the one you listened to). As more manufactures are getting into the AC-3 component market, some of them will choose MOT and some of them will choose ZRAN, so you will see more manufactures using MOT's chip. But what ZRAN makes is certainly not JUNK as you mentioned.

I'm long on ZRAN. I think because of the DVD the demands for AC-3 audio components will be higher and higher later this year to next year.
