My personal feeling is China wants CDMA because it's superior in terms of capacity (lots of Chinese people), cost per subscriber, cost to upgrade to 3G (regardless of which 3G CDMA standard is settled upon) and it has the most prestige (cool factor) for those reasons (how can China demonstrate it's sophistication without CDMA?).

I'm sure the top Chinese engineers have been lobbying for CDMA so China won't be left behind with outdated technology. So China wants CDMA but a little bluffing may allow them to kill two (or more) birds with one stone.

I think China will allow CDMA no matter how rudely the Americans treat them. They can't afford not to and they know it.
