Mika, sure the NTT, Ericy 4.something chip rate was about 'business'. They didn't have technology so had to play at business. Unfortunately, business plays second fiddle to technology and marketers and business people can dribble out of both sides of their mouths all they like and Ericy tried that strategy for going on a decade with respect to CDMA. It got them nowhere, though it did get their share price down to $20 after their GSM sales got them up.

But the cold harsh facts of physics and technology rendered all the drool irrelevant. Now they have had to stump up the money and buy their way into technology.

I enjoy sticking my guesswork on the line - it would be a big joke on me if the chip rate is not the cdmaOne chip rate for all the options in WWeb.

I have to agree I do look at things in a different way from most people. Upside down might be an apt description though of course from my perspective it seems right way up. But being 'out of step' seems to be a GOOD thing in the stock markets. Which is not to say that being out of step is always a good thing. Mostly, out of step people lose their money. Out of step and upside down is a necessary but not sufficient condition for getting things right.

Where I agree with you is that business is absolutely and totally essential to making technology work in the customers' hands and marketing is totally essential in attracting the customer to the technology.

Business by itself is not enough and now Ericy knows that. But they have got plenty of business which they can use to fund an introduction to CDMA by Qualcomm. Not good for them in the near term, but at least they'll be included in the future instead of left in legacy GSM and other technologies.

I'm very happy too! I bet Ericy, Q! and a lot more people are grinning too.

But I bet OneTel isn't. I bet the North American GSM gang isn't. I bet Schmitt isn't. Nokia will be scrambling. Bill Frezza will be bemused at the turn of events. Prof Lusignan will say 'oh well, we are all human and get things wrong'. Some Ericy technical advisors will have had a career shift not necessarily to their advantage for having put Ericy crook all these years. Tero will be revising his handset strategy and cooking up a storm in biotechs.
