The scenario sounds plausible, and perhaps, even probable.

One point that I think is unlikely is:

Also, I may be in the minority here, but with the establishment of a virtual duopoley in the corporate PC space (with Compaq and Dell dominating), Dell could benefit from better margins...as a result of less competition in the large corporate market...(although I think Gateway and Micron would get more aggressive in this space, so any potential future advantage could be partially or fully nullified)...


No duopoly with rising margins as a result of that duopoly as others would rapidly move in as soon as this opportunity is created. How long do you think it would take the Japanese, Taiwanese or Koreans to seize on this type of opportunity.

I believe that Dell will benefit from rising margins because it is much better at innovation than its competitors. As fast as they move to catch up, Dell moves faster to raise the competitive bar.
