The EMC deal is not as significant as the Dell deal and I am not
basing this on the fact that the Dell deal is more dollars, it is
based upon the fact it is a new deal and Dell has a model that IBM
needs but due to channel conflicts may have to do through Dell versus
implement themselves. If you read the EMC press clip closely they
use the word "continue". The deal with EMC is not new but in my
view and extension. IBM gets little in return since EMC has
draconian business practices and EMC's value is in its intellectual
property which they will not license to a competitor even if they are
an end user using a complete product in production. IBM's DASD OEM
business has been large for a number of years and keeps getting
better each year so the EMC deal is a positive step (at the expense of
Seagate and others), it just isnt as good as the Dell deal IMHO.
