I own both GTE and Worldcom. My broker at Dean Witter has mentioned that he was aware of talks between the 2 going back several months now. there was a rumor about a takeover of Worldcom by GTE at around $40.00 per share.

Lately, there are quite a few rumors about several of the telcom companies getting together. Whomever buys Worldcom, if anyone does, will get a solid company, with a presence in the internet market, long distance, and equipment, etc, GTE is a rock solid investment, even without Worldcom. Both stocks should do well, even if they remain independent for the time being.

Just my opinion. I want to disclose again that I have positions in both companies mentioned above, but am in no way, shape or form attempting to start rumors or influence anyone to purchase, sell, or do anything with any security mentioned above.
