<<Michael Ruettgers, CEO of EMC, is posted as saying that it is likely that Dell will take over IBM's PC biz sometime in the future>>

That appeared on Dow Jones and was published in today's WSJ article on IBM PC problems. The WSJ obviously contacted the company and printed their response. I simply added it for context.

The important part was not that IBM denied the rumor. It was that the spokesperson claimed that IBM PCs were profitable in the fourth quarter and that the bulk of the losses were in the first half of the year. Ruettgers most likely did not know that. It would be too inside.

As for the possibility that IBM exits the PC business, of course it is a possibility. It was a possibility years ago when Akers was terminated also (rampant rumors back then also). The problem is that except for a very few insiders, no one knows precisely how IBM allocates costs and component sales to determine how the pc division is doing.
