I'm intrigued by efax

Quite a few billboards advertising the service on my morning commute from San Francisco to the Peninsula, so I signed up. Seemed to go very smoothly.

I personally hate fax, but if somebody absolutely, positively has to send a fax to me, then I'd rather use this mechanism than deal with paper faxes or a PC card.

The current Forbes magazine has an article called Forever Fax! A technology that won't die. See: forbes.com

Jakob Nielsen refers to efax in one of his excellent alertbox articles:
useit.com (I agree with his assessment that he only gets faxes from dinosaurs).

The question is: how does efax get revenue? How much does the service cost to provide?

On the revenue side: premium service, outbound fax, banner ads.
Is efax set up as a telco, and gets a fraction of the phone call cost? Maybe some arrangement with long distance companies for increased traffic created? (My fax number was set up in the 603 area code - New Hampshire. Assuming that the most likely source of faxes to me is the Bay Area, then this would maximize long distance charges.)

On the cost side - is there a marginal cost for each fax number. I think that we can discount efax setting up a new line for each number.
