I am not sure about the MSFT developers moving to Sun. I am sure
this does happen the same as people from Sun going to MSFT. But
I agree with you on the note that MSFT will have a definite longer
term problem as Beans model will become more popular then
the COM Microsoft has advocated for many years. Microsoft will not
go away but it will definilty NOT have the growth it has had in the
past. But till this slow down happens its a long way (perhaps another
2 years or so). Beans will take a while to become popular. Many
developers are hooked on OLE and the installed base is so huge
it will take many years for Beans to even match that.

In any case Sun will grow no matter what! One thing I have noticed
is that people on this thread tend to compare Sun with Microsoft. But
this is the wrong company to compare Sun with! Software is just a
very very very small part of Sun's business. The main compettitors of
Sun are HP, Dec, and IBM. Microsoft will help Sun (and IBM, DEC
and HPs of the world) in their further growth while these other
companies (HPs of the world) will be extremly compettitive and those
are the ones Sun should very much be careful of! So I dont
understand why MSFT is mentioned so much. Sun is mainly
competing with HP, DEC and IBM and not necessarily Microsoft!
If Windows NT is of concern; Yes it is challenging UNIX. But then
Pepsi is also challenging Coke! I used to be a UNIX engineer for over
11 years but for the past 4 years I have been using Windows NT
almost 100%. It is a neat platform for development, but it can never
ever replace UNIX. It simply does not have the power and/or
capabilities of UNIX. Somehow I can not imagine IRS running
its software on Windows NT (actually I kind of wished they did!!!). But
the reality is for massive critical mission applications nothing can
replace UNIX. And that is where the money is made BIG time: In
huge mission critical applications which will gorw as internet will
boom even more. Windows NT is a cute little platform for doing nice
things. But try to convince someone like IRS to use Windows NT!
Actually on April 15th I will state on my tax return as a suggestion for
IRS to use Windows NT! But wait a minute, I know for sure they will
audit me for being hostile toward them!!
