I contend that RadiSys is the closest comparable.

I agree with you that an embedded hardware company is the best comparable. However, both SBS and RadiSys develop software, too. And, Wind River and Integrated Systems hire programmers with expertise in both hardware and software. An applications software programmer would fall on his face at an RTOS company.

For these reasons, I consider all 4 companies to be vendors of intellectual property for embedded systems and I expect no difference in the growth rate between the hardware and software sides of the business.

Phoenix Technologies and Mentor Graphics sell software for embedded systems, as well as semiconductor intellectual property. Both companies leveraged their historical software strengths and marketing channels to enter the emerging SIP field. MIPS, ARM, and the DSP Group also sell software and SIP for embedded systems. The businesses are compatible and I expect continued blurring of lines between hardware and software to continue.
