I wonder if there are any long time Ampex followers on the thread who can tell us what Ampex was doing while the government was salvaging parts off of other drives in an effort to keep one last drive running so that they wouldn't lose all of the satellite data from the 60s and 70s? Why didn't they assist by making another drive or at least parts? The long term cost to their reputation from this fiasco was surely more than what it would have cost to build another drive. In fact this may be a part of the reason for the slide the company has taken in the subsequent years.

I can assure you that if I were the buyer for a fortune 100 company and I was aware of this, I would not consider any non-compatible media/drive combination from Ampex regardless of the advantages. I am also reasonably confident that while we on this thread may not be aware of this dark day in the history of Ampex, salesmen for competitive products are not, and therefore presumably buyers of drives are not, either.
