A plausible theory.

However, anecdotal evidence is to the contrary. I have owned Dell machines since my first PCs Unlimited 286/12.5MHz beauty. I've been happy with them all and they always cost less than comparably equipped machines available at the stores (as long as I wanted to avoid Packard Bell for obvious reasons).

This time, however, I'm buying several eMachines. I don't need the monitor, so that's not an issue. I'm upgrading P120s/133s/166s mostly for office/internet use, but also for my aging pleasure machine at home.<g>

I don't need the fastest fps rate and the 4MB ATI Rage Pro should be more than sufficient along with the new Celeron 433 for $599 each (coming soon), although the current 366 isn't bad either. CNET ran a test on the Celeron vs. PII and the fps rate wasn't that far off (not like the AMD K-2 chips).

I admit I'm not a first time buyer and I have an above average ability to take off the cover and put in some additional memory if need be <g>, but I'm also not a DELL basher, company or stock. I have liked the products in the past and I admire the company for its business plan execution.

It's just that their Celeron 333 offering at $1029 isn't competitive for my needs.

[no position in Dell long or short]
