As it happens you have one of the premier scotch aficionados in all creation attending the party. I would recommend a short course in how to discriminate among the major scotch producing regions, along with a brief exercise in determining which malts from each region are particularly definitive. This requires you to drink about 30 "wee drams" of the appropriate test material, but it is well worth the effort. Most of the "popular" single malts sold in the US are speyside malts but I prefer the Isley malts. Suggest you start with Laphroig...
