nolimitz,

My modem quit Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday I made the 35 mile trip to the nearest Staples and bought a 3Com US Rob. 56K Faxmodem for $100 (after $20 rebate). Took about a half hour from pulling the first plug to being online. The computer is a Dell Dimension XPS P90c purchased in May 1995. One finger screw to remove the cover, one screw to remove the modem.

Before, with the old US Rob. 28.8, I usually logged on at 21000 to 24000 bps, lowest rate since was 45000 bps, currently at 49333 bps. The difference with SI especially is incredible but it is noticeable where ever I go.

Last year, a couple weeks before the 3 year warranty expired, the CD drive went kaflooey (love that word). I called Dell and a few days later (they had trouble locating such an ancient CD drive ggggg) a guy showed up and installed the new one, shook my hand and left.

My two rules for buying important equipment.

1. Always buy the best.
2. Always buy the extended warranty.
