IMHO you've followed the wrong source for reliable info on Merced. Please refer to <www.mackido.com> archive which has some understandable technical analysis of the relative technologies. My reading yields just the opposite view of the "promise" of Merced. Intel itself has downplayed Merced and emphasized it's second design which has more of HP's design influence.

Remember too, Merced will be backwardly compatible through emulation which will result in present PC programs running at 1/2 current speed under '95 or '98. The detailed information is out there from various articles over the past 16 months. IMHO, both Intel and MS are going to have serious problems in advancing their technologies in the next two years.

Sure, IBM positions itself as a central player in any new tech roll out. Not only are they in the chip business, but their customer base is firmly immeshed in the WinTel monopoly. IBM makes most of it's money servicing these corporations and providing the WAN/Mainframe solutions.
They are constantly "hedging" so as not to loose any of their customers.
