Wall Street cooled its heels on Friday as uncertainty about everything from corporate earnings to the Kosovo crisis gave investors little reason to trade U.S. stocks.
The Dow Jones industrial average finished unofficially down 14.15 points at 9822.24, a decline of 0.14 percent.
Losers outpaced winners by a narrow margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where under 700 million shares changed hands. ..New York stock market latest report ......[.N] ..New York stock market display of all reports.........[.N-LEN] --------------------- U.S. FINANCIAL MARKETS -------------------
The dollar hit a record high against the euro Friday in a broad-based rally reflecting growing anxiety over the Kosovo crisis and hopes the super-hot U.S. economy will keep outperforming those of Europe and Asia.
"Give me a reason to sell the dollar," Warburg Dillon Read currency strategist Tomas Jelf said as NATO allies intensified their missile strikes in Yugoslavia and traders speculated that the European Central Bank may soon cut interest rates. *U.S. Treasuries up solidly but bond off highs in afternoon. *Loss cutting in stocks weighed. The UK's FTSE 100 stock index rose for a second day on Friday, lifted by rising oil shares and reassured by Wall Street's recovery from a steep early setback.
Led higher by a 2.5 percent rise in index heavyweight BP Amoco , which boosted the blue chip index by some 13 points, the FTSE 100 closed 54.2 points or 0.9 percent higher at 6,139.2. Gainers were in a three-to-two majority. ..Latest report ............[.L] ..Latest full report .....[.L/R] ---------------------------- TOKYO -----------------------------
Tokyo stocks closed little changed Friday, as buying by foreigners shifting assets into the Japanese market offset the unwinding of cross-shareholdings by domestic institutions, traders said.
They said the market fluctuated most of the day, pushed up by foreign buying moving into Japan on expectations of an improvement in the Japanese economy, and pulled down by domestic institutions continuing to unwind cross shareholdings. ..Full report .............[.T] ..Display of all reports .............[.T-LEN] ------------------------- OTHER MARKETS ------------------------ * Mexico stocks close lower on pre-Easter caution [nN2647430] ..Latest report ..[.MX] ..Display of all reports.......[.MX-LEN] * Toronto stocks end in positive turf, Bid.Com jumps [nN26590939] ..Latest report .[.TO] ..Display of all reports .......[.TO-LEN] * German DAX closes lower, Munich Re dives [nL2681234] ..Latest report ..[.F] ..Display of all reports .........[.F-LEN] ----------------------------------------------------------------
