Barshefsky to Arrive in Beijing Today for WTO Talks, SCMP Says
Beijing, March 27 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky will arrive in Beijing today to continue the U.S. government's talks with China over the latter's bid to join the World Trade Organization, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unidentified American business executives. The visit, Barshefsky's second in the past month, follows reports that Beijing is offering concessions in telecommunications, financial services and agricultural industries in the form of greater foreign ownership and more access to China's market. William Daley, the U.S. secretary of commerce will also be in Beijing on Monday and plans to visit Shanghai and Guangzhou, the paper said.
An agreement, after more than a dozen years of talks, could help open Chinese markets to U.S. goods and reduce the U.S. trade deficit, which last year reached a record $56.9 billion and is expanding this year.
