Robert, I just read the additional posts here, and it seems like we have the makings of a good discussion going. Some superb talent has chimed in.
On the point you made, concerning my statement:
FAC: >There are some who will allow a single address to assume various proxies by the subscriber using DHCP in carrier- or customer- provided equipment (CPE) on prem.<
By this I meant that some of the (smaller, primarily, at this time) CLEC/ISPs who are supporting DSL have actually fashioned their services, using certain enabling types of DSL equipment, around the ability to facilitate multiple client addresses in different ways. The fact that they endorse it, and that they show the customer how to do it, is a plus for them. Although, it may be a short term lead that they enjoy, since it is a growing trend. (Someone, correct me here if you disagree.)
Whether some providers at the present time prohibit multiple clients on the same link (which is just the opposite strategy of the foregoing) may be rendered academic at some point, IMO.
One of the benefits to be derived from (some would say, a primary driver of) IP over broadband is the ability to support multiple clients -supporting all media types- using multiple addresses, no matter if they be static or dynamic. More comments welcome. Let's keep this one going. Frank_C. |
