Regarding your statement about my "going overboard....not having evidence, etc.". Ron, this is the unbridgeable gap between denialists and us extremeists.
I will bet I study many more articles, analysises, reports, etc.,etc., per day than you do, and thus have far more 'evidence'
Ken, It has become my conclusion over the past 3 years of following the issue (and I read quite a bit myself), you can read all you want about Y2K but without specific evidence we can only theorize on the actual fallout from the the date turnover.
I also used to freak out over the potential consequences, including depression, poweroutages, food/fuel shortages, political disruption, both overseas and domestic, martial law, bank runs, supply chain dependencies, cats and dogs living together, the rise of the anti-christ... blah, blah, blah...:0)
But then I FINALLLY came to the realization the I couldn't do anything about most of those events. I couldn't control the potentially global disruptions or make the problem go away and save the world in the process.
But what I could control is how it impacts me, both physically and mentally. I didn't have to live in self-absorbed fear of the unknown. I could prepare for some potential disruptions, stock some food, buy several water filters... etc, etc, etc, and then watch as events unfold to discern in the latter part of '99 whether I should "jack up" or relax my preparedness level as more EVIDENCE comes to light of what will work and what won't.
Y2K is coming... it may be bad.. but then again, it may not really have noticeable effects on our daily lives. Who knows?? I say WHO CARES? I will do my part not to make it any worse than it already is and I will be prepared not to lose my head, but rather to be part of the relief and restoration effort.
I'm tired of living in fear of a date. I want to have control of my life back. I want to put fear in its place so that I don't become part of making the problem worse.
Ken, it's not about being "vindicated" in an argument. I'm not arguing in order to "win". I'm debating in order to discern exactly WHAT will be the actual state of affairs, post-2000.
It's about taking charge of our lives and not letting disruptive events permanently control our lives. When we start realizing that IT and Embedded systems don't have to control us or our lives, and that we can work around them using human ingenuity, then we become part of the solution.
Finally, having two cats which we love to death and spoil rotten, I still think your post on Y2K/animals was going to far to the extreme. Some things should just be common sense.
Control your fears... Don't let them control you.
Regards,
Ron
