Russia Cancels Lewinsky Visit

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

MOSCOW -- Russia's rage over NATO airstrikes in Yugoslavia
boiled over Friday night when it canceled the upcoming visit by
Monica Lewinsky.

The former White House intern had been scheduled to visit Russia in
June or July to promote a Russian-language version of her book,
"Monica's Story."

Friday night, however, the Russian publisher announced that the trip was
being canceled.

"One can hardly imagine that millions of Russian citizens would give Ms.
Lewinsky a proper welcome under the circumstances," a representative
of the Russian publishing company told the news agency Interfax. "The
visit would come at the wrong time."

Ms. Lewinsky has figured before in the Russian reaction to NATO's
attack. The newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets charged that the end
of her affair with President Clinton has left the American leader so
frustrated and despondent that he has resorted to military action.

As Russian protesters rallied at the American Embassy this week, one
women carried an English-language sign: "President Clinton, Make Love,
Not War."
