Diamond Discovered In Mauritania

March 26, 1999

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - Geologists have discovered diamond
deposits in northern Mauritania, the country's minister of communication,
Rachid Ould Saleh, said Wednesday at a news briefing in Nouakchott.

"We have come to the final conclusion that there is diamond in Mauritania,"
Saleh said, adding that an assessment of the find is under way to see
"whether the quantity discovered are marketable."

Several mining companies, spurred by reports of the existence of precious
metals in Mauritania, are closely working with the country's Geological
Exploration Board (OMRG) in the search for marketable diamond deposits,
especially in north-central R'Gueibat area.

Saleh, who spoke at the end of a cabinet meeting, also told journalists that
an Australian geologist discovered gold deposits in the Inchiri area in the
early 1990s.

The Mauritanian government authorised the group to set up the
development company -- MORAK (Akjoujt Gold Mines) -- in the regional
capital.

But the company had to wind up after it was found that the gold deposit was
not of commercial quantity.
