Now it is well known that an obstaclette is a device used in hat blocking. Specifically, it is an instrument used to straighten the small feather sometimes used to adorn fedoras. Why would a creature wish to rise above an obstaclette?

But perhaps you are referring to the second meaning of the word -- a long-extinct tortoise-like mammal that had trouble figuring things out. Simple things, like eating were difficult enough, but breeding posed insurmountable obstacles because obstaclettes believed that virginity was a virtue. Hence the name. Medieval chastity belts were modeled after female obstaclettes.

For some reason texts on medieval history, hat blocking and paleontology seem to lack these historical nuggets.
