Joining in the debate, between you and Vendit, on technology and the future.

Vendit, I also took the opportunity to go to the site you posted about the "Butler" and the concept of a integrated automated office.

Getting back to the issue of broadband and wireless and AOL.
AOL has established itself as the cyber community (16 million eyeballs). This is a very lucrative situation for the e-commerce folks (EBAY deal with AOL). AOL has utilized a widely established system such as the telephone line to capture the eyes of the US and the world. Can you imagine a Siberian farmer having access to the Internet via AOL and getting an opportunity to buy merchandise? I am sure the farmer does not have access to broadband or wireless. Consider a similar situation in the US heartland. Do they have broadband/cable and wireless there? I don't think so.

New technologies such as wireless that are on the brink of commercialization can serve as a bootstrap mechanism for Prodigy, Mindspring and other ISP's. But they will be competing for a small drop of honey. They could continue to pursue the technology which is available to a relatively select few. AOL in the meantime is concentrating or getting those "eyeballs" by ensuring that their servers (partnership with SUN) and their browsers (acquisition of Netscape) do not serve as a speed bottleneck.

This is not a rumor but just my thought. Should AOL be doing something on the network access/switching technoloy side. Cabletron is in the toilet and as a result is a target for acquisition, Cisco is already available to strike deals similar to the AOL/SUN deal. Maybe we need to keep our eyes open. Never underestimate Steve Case and his team.
