Z,

Assuming my math is right and assuming GMR will work up to the superparamagnetic effect (Note: it's now being called effect and not limit), which is somewhere around 40GBit/in2 (an area of argument), that would equate to about 54 Gbytes per 3.5-inch platter. Did I do the math right?

(Seagate has demo'ed 16 Gbytes/in2 or 21.5 Gbytes/platter - so we're getting there.)

Re next major storage innovation: Seagate says optical; IBM says holography. Any others out there?

Yes, microactuators (Also called dual or two stage actuators) are quickly becoming the hot topic of conversation. As the TPI (tracks per inch) goes up, as it is doing with GMR, I'm told it will make the use of microactuators necessary - not just cute.

Regards,
LT
