Negroponte (the famous "Negroponte shift") also said that Direct Broadcast Satellite would never get off the ground. I would not place too much in what he says. Last year Scientific American had a good article on the future of satellites, and it mentions Negroponte's mistakes.

As for the upcoming "solar flares": no one knows what they will do. I have read reports saying that they may blow out the entire telecom infrastructure of the world, to they might do nothing.

My point: satellite wireless for AOL will probably happen sometime in the future off the Skybridge system, for example, or maybe Teledesic. That's the easiest way for AOL to get into broadband in a lot of areas in the world, and broadband is what lets the internet become a medium similar to Television.

I don't think AOL would buy Iridium, however. Iridium has only one billions minutes of user capacity per year-- that would not work for AOL at all. Besides, those minutes of usage cost somewhere like $5/minute.
