HP didn't bid because EMC did. Remember that EMC and HP actually compete against each other if EMC finds it first!

I am not up on MTIC's mirroring capability, but what the customer needed was n-way, not just 2-way. Hopefully MTIC has the common sense to implement this version.

The other thing we are able to do is use a multi-initiator scsi chain to mirror existing HP data onto IBM drives, without stealing host cpu cycles (just SCSI bandwidth). This can be done online without bringing anything down, except for a brief shutdown to attach everything. MTI has no way of doing this. These are the kinds of things you can do with an enterprise-class subsystem, and not something like MTI.

As for MTI winning over Clariion, I should certainly hope they would. The clariion line was great in the late 80's, but they haven't kept up. Perhaps because their profits have been constantly sucked dry by DGN just trying to stay in business, rather than used for R&D.
