I think for Low Earth Orbiting satellites ("bent-pipe"design) internet is a good likelihood a few years out. The spectrum is highly manageable, and not "unstable" as you seem to suggest. Direct broadcast (DBS) is now on both Ku band, as well as C band, and internet transmission capability via Motorola, Samsung, or Sharp manufactured ultrasats to the home user is certain to come in. (Ultrasats are very small "dishes" [9" in diameter] that receive the signal from the orbiting small satellite). However, this is in areas of the world that are topographically/geographically incapable of copper or fiber. That is a sizeable landmass, with plenty of possible internet users in these areas.

I have read that America On Line is looking at the Brazilian market via both satellite transmission and ground based infrastructure. Already the satellite market in Latin America is heavily responsible for intranets, tele-medicine, and distance learning. AOL certainly will make its content available on future systems like Teledesic and Skybridge. These are systems that will be forthcoming in three-five years. And don't think for a moment that Bill Gates would not like to transmit MSN on Teledesic. America On Line will definitely get its share of the satellite internet delivery market, in my opinion, once the systems are shown to be reliable transmitters. It only means more growth for America On Line in many places where it is now not possible.
